EPIPHANY: UNCOVERING A LIFE OF MEANING
Six Tuesday evenings, Jan.5 - Feb. 9, or six Wednesday evenings, Jan. 6 - Feb. 10, in Epiphany: 6:30-8:30, Facilitator: Tim Scorer. Epiphany is the season in which the meaning of Jesus' mission comes into focus through the adoration of the magi, his baptism, the beginning of his ministry and his call to us to follow. The experience of these six Wednesday evenings is intended to bring a sharper focus to the meaning and mission of our lives in this one season, at the beginning of this one year. Our primary resource will be the book “The Life of Meaning: Reflections on Faith, Doubt, and Repairing the World”, a collection of writings by key thinkers of our time. The book is available in the church office for $20. This will be a small group experience with a maximum group size of 16. Register early if you would like to participate! Register by emailing timscorer@gmail.com or by signing up at the table in the narthex on Sunday. Please read Chapter 1 prior to the first session on January 6th. For more information call Tim Scorer at (604)947-0967.
ANCIENT PRACTICES OF THE CHURCH: The Liturgical Year. Join Rev. Kathryn Ransdell on Sunday mornings, 8:45 am-10 am, beginnning Sun., Jan. 10-Feb. 14. Learn the history and development of the church year as well as exploring the question of what the liturgical year means for us today. Highly suggested text (although not mandatory): "The Liturgical Year: the spiraling adventure of the spiritual life" by Joan Chittester. (Check Vine & Fig for the book.) Cost for the course includes a Liturgical Year poster: $2. Register in the Narthex on Sunday, or, kathryn.staw@telus.net
PUTTING FAITH INTO WRITTEN WORD: For those who contributed to the Advent devotional booklet and for those who would like to contribute to a Lent devotional booklet, please join Kathryn and Tim after-church Jan. 17 for a workshop that will process what it was like to write for Advent, explore what it means to put your faith into writing, and sign-up to contribute to the Lent daily devotional. Light lunch will be served.
EPIPHANY: WATER INTO WINE! On Sunday, January 17th: hear John's story of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana as part of our worship. On Saturday, January 16th: hear the drama of John's story amongst the barrels and aromas of the Fort Winery in Fort Langley. Share in reflection on the story while you sample the fruit wines of the Fort Winery. Depending on the response, we will take either a 47 or 56 seat charter bus from the church, leaving at 11:30 and returning at 4:30. This does not include lunch, so you will want to bring a brown bag lunch for the bus ride. COST: The bus fare, wine sampling, appetizers, and drama: $30. The community experience: priceless. LEADERSHIP: Kathryn Ransdell and Tim Scorer. SIGN UP: In the Narthex on Sundays, or, email, kathryn.staw@telus.net.
BROWN BAG-IT for SOMEONE ELSE: On Sun., Jan. 24, after we have heard through worship the good news of Luke 4:14-21 (Jesus brings good news to the poor), gather with others after-church in the Salons to hear how the work of a local mental health agency intersects with the work of our congregation. You are invited to bring a brown bag of food for the food bank for someone else as your "meal" for the day. You might choose to fast through the lunch presentation as a way of being in solidarity with those who will go without lunch on that day. Or, you might choose to take care of your physical needs and bring a brown-bag-for-yourself in addition to a brown bag for someone else. Leadership: Rev. Kathryn Ransdell, Jen Cunnings and Joan McCreath (12:15-1:15pm).
We have free parking on the side of the church. For more information on times and regulation.
Wheelchair access available from Nelson Street.
