SALT AND LIGHT:
A one-year certificate program in Christian discipleship

LEADERSHIP: Tim Scorer

You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavours of this earth...You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. Matthew 5:13-16 selected verses

Be a member of an intentional Christian community for a year as you deepen your understanding and practice of the Christian Way. See through experience how discipleship is a response to God's passion for the world. Engage with the questions of meaning and faith that are most pressing at this time of life.

Key elements of the program include

  • meeting 15 times in a small 'base' or 'home' group
  • deepening into spiritual practice including prayer
  • choosing experiences related to an individualized path of learning
  • following a discipline of personal Bible reading and communal Bible experience
  • engaging in action for justice
  • participating in a retreat experience in community
  • discerning the use of personal resources including time, money, property and gifts
  • focusing on the personal journey through written or creative responses
  • receiving mentor-ship as accompaniment on the journey

An introductory Session will be held on Sept. 19 after worship.

DISCIPLE:

A 35-week in-depth Bible study will begin in September.

LEADERSHIP:Deb Osmar.

Class size will be 12 to 20 people of various ages, life experiences, denominations and religious (or non-religious) backgrounds. While group members come from unique places along the faith journey they have in common a commitment to regular daily Bible reading and attendance in the weekly class. If you want to have a greater understanding of the Bible, a closer relationship with God, a place to struggle through life’s tough questions, and a desire to build a faith foundation then DISCIPLE is the place for you.

    WALKING THE LABYRINTH

This is an ancient meditation/prayer practice, one that became very popular in Europe when pilgrimages to the Holy Land were no longer possible. Instead, folk would travel to cathedrals and holy sites in Europe … and often there was a Labyrinth, marked in the floor of a particular cathedral, a pattern which circled round and round, finally bringing the walker into the middle of a circle, and then out again. Chartres became the best known of these locations.

There is a Labyrinth at our neighboring Anglican church, St. Paul's. We have been able to reserve the Labyrinth for St. Andrew's-Wesley on the third Thursday of each month. We will gather at St. Paul's, at 7 p.m.; there will be some words of explanation and introduction, which will vary, depending on the experience of those who gather.

    • When: third Monday of each month
    • Time: 7:00pm
    • Where: St. Paul's Anglican Church, corner of Jervis and Pendrell
    • Leadership: Judy Capes, who has been trained in guiding folk in their use of the Labyrinth; indeed, she has actually taken some of her training at Chartres Cathedral.
    • Cost: By donation on the specific evening (to St Paul's)
